Match Report - Sea-Lice Ladies 7’S Tournament at Hunters Hill

5 July 2018

Well with much anticipation and to be honest a touch of trepidation the girls ventured to Hunters Hill for their first tournament. However all this worry etc was not so much about the coming Rugby but about getting the Sea-Lice Ladies Kit. After receiving mixed news during the week prior, the gear was literally pulled off the plane at Mascot after fronting up to the DHL Centre with a Waybill in hand.
Anyhow all good the girls got their gear, dressing into their resplendid Blue, Gold and Pink, SYM/B2B/BAYSIDE DENTAL sponsored attire. After numerous photos, selfies, group shots, Women’s Weekly shots we were ready for action. Although greeted by the skinniest field ever seen at an adult tournament, the girls were keen and soon got into their warmup. Their first encounter was v Norths Rugby who despite putting up a brave defence could not match the counter-attack, stoic defence of the girl’s who ran away with a 2 tries to nil result. Big mentions here to the support play of the girls, particularly Nikki, Trish and Bronte. Our next game was actually a forfeit so we went into the 3rd Pool Game with 2 wins up. A surprise opponent was UNSW who seemed to be partly made up of French speaking girls playing for their sponsored Uni. The match seemed to be in the Sea-Lice grasp, as we had run away with a try advantage, before the Frenchies scored in the second half. This game was scrappy but a high-light for us was the defence of the girls repelling numerous raids, well done particularly Maggie and Charlotte (who saved a near certain try). A draw was the final result.
We then went into the Quarter Finals, as the leader of our Pool and took on Macquarie Uni for a place in the Semi’s. This game was probably the best the girls played particularly Sarah, Jess W. and Abbey Steele who smacked the Uni girls in defence. At times the girl thought they had ventured into the ‘Land of the Giants’ with one particular girl attempting to dominant the break-down – great clean-outs saw her looking for the passing truck. Great effort to the girls and great win to springboard them into the Semi. Special mentions to Jess Mully, Layne and Kate.
The next game saw us playing yet another Education Facility – Hawksbury Agricultural School. These girls must have been practicising decapitation skills on their respective farms as girls were continually taken high. Despite our coaching staff protestations the referee allowed it and our girls were rattled. It did not help that Kate, was crushed in a tackle and was taken to hospital with a suspected spinal (all good – Kate is fine and suffered ligament type injuries thankfully). This turned Abbey B. red who responded by just about taking on the whole Hawkesbury Ag. Team – our hero Abs rallied the team and continually cleaned the opposition out like rolling pins! Unfortunately the girls went done in this encounter and had to call it a day.
Great first go chicks and I think on a full-field we would have done a lot better, not to mention a whistleblower who was able to keep tackles safe rather something out of WWF.
As it turned out the opposition to the Hawkesbury girls did not turn up for the final (?) and the Sea-Lice were awarded the ‘Runners Up’ Pennant – Yeah!
Big thanks to our support staff of Mick, Mark, Dean and Lee for putting up the tent and their assistance with the day. Particularly Lee the Bus-Driver, whose Ear’s are still ringing from the boisterous bus trip home (funny social media videos girls!).
Bring on the next Tournament.
