2020/2021 Patrol Season Update

2020/2021 Patrol Season Update from SLS NSW

Monday 10 August 2020

Fellow Lifesavers,

As you know, we are approximately 6 weeks out from the start of the patrol season and we continue to be faced with an evolving and fluid operating environment as a result of COVID-19. With increased beach visitation expected this summer due to ongoing travel restrictions and a forecast of hot temperatures, we know that members are keen to understand the organisation’s position in relation to patrolling activities for the 2020/21 season.

Unless advised otherwise by the authorities, we will commence the patrol season on 26 September 2020.

Patrols will inevitably look a little different this year, and we understand there is a need for clear information and communication, and positive and supportive leadership to enable clubs and branches to plan effectively for the season ahead and keep members engaged and informed.

We are currently reviewing responses to our COVID-19 member survey and working closely with Surf Life Saving Australia to finalise a SLSNSW plan for patrol operations, and to confirm if adjustments can be made to skills maintenance requirements in some areas to ensure the safety of both our members and the public on the beach. We are working as quickly as possible to complete this plan and we hope to communicate with you again before the end of August.

We are also working with the NSW Government and Local Governments to determine how any beach closures will be managed, who will police beach visitation levels and expectations for how we might engage with the public to ensure a unified approach and understanding of roles and responsibilities. We feel strongly that any forced beach closures should not place our volunteers in uncomfortable or stressful situations.

We appreciate that some members may be concerned for their own safety in regard to the virus and we will be working with clubs, branches and Support Operations to ensure there are additional safeguards put in place (for instance personal protective equipment) and flexibility in patrol operations are offered where possible.

Clubs and branches will need to take into account the personal circumstances of members and we will be working with them to help keep all members engaged this season, regardless of their level of participation. If you feel uncomfortable about any aspect of your role as a surf lifesaver, we encourage you to have these conversations now with your clubs to assist with pre-season planning.

This summer Surf Life Saving may well be in the spotlight, along with all that we do to keep our communities safe. In the same way we saw our firefighters stand up and protect us last summer, this year it may be our turn, as surf lifesavers and guardians of the coastline, to stand up and protect.

We have complete faith and trust in the strength and skills of our volunteers and we look forward to providing leadership and support to all clubs, whatever the season may bring.
