Education Awards
To volunteer for North Cronulla Life Saving Patrol’s you need to hold either the Surf Rescue Certificate, (SRC) or the Bronze Medallion Award. Your Bronze Medallion is the ‘gateway’ to all of the other awards, and members are encouraged to do further awards once they have completed their Bronze Medallion.

We encourage all North Cronulla Club members to continue their education throughout their membership. Whether they are interested in improving their lifesaving skills in the water or on the beach, there are many opportunities that are available to all members through various SLSA awards. Surf Rescue certificate (SRC)
Course Description
Candidates learn the basic Patrolling skills, including Surf awareness, Surf Rescues, Resuscitation, Radio operation and communications.
Course Requirements
Candidates must be:
- 13 or 14 years of age at the date of assessment, (held at the end of the course).
- able to swim 200m in under 5 minutes in a pool of no less than 25m in length, (goggles permitted). This may be tested prior to the commencement of the course.
- a financial member of North Cronulla SLSC.
Course Structure
The SRC course takes approximately 5 to 6 weeks, with two sessions a week. One evening session, (usually Tues. or Wed.) of theory, and one morning session, (Sunday) wet training. Each session lasts about 1 ½ hours.
North Cronulla SLSC usually runs one course starting around mid-August.

Bronze Medallion (BM)
Course Description
Candidates learn the essential Patrolling skills, including Workplace safety, Surf awareness, Basic anatomy, Surf Rescues, Resuscitation and use of a Defibrilator, Emergency Care, Radio operation and communications, carries and supports and Basic Beach management.
Course Requirements
Candidates must be:
- at least 15 years of age at the date of assessment, (held at the end of the course).
- able to swim 400m in under 9 minutes in a pool of no less than 25m in length, (goggles permitted). This may be tested prior to the commencement of the course.
- a financial member of North Cronulla SLSC.
Course Structure
The Bronze Medallion takes approximately 7 to 8 weeks, with two sessions a week. One evening session, (usually Tues. or Wed.) of theory, and one morning session, (Sunday) wet training. Each session lasts about 1 ½ -2 hours.
North Cronulla SLSC usually runs courses, through September-October, and another running through October-November. More may be scheduled subject to demand.

Advanced Rescusitation Certificate (ARTC)
Course Description
Candidates are trained in the use of oxygen as therapy, airway management devices and automated external defibrillators. They are given the skills and knowledge necessary to respond to an emergency situation.
Course Requirements
- Bronze Medallion
- First Aid Certificate (HLTAID011)
Course Structure
The ARTC award is usually held over 4 evening sessions of approximately 3 hours each. They are timed to occur after a Bronze medallion course so newly-trained ‘bronzies’ can do a further award.

IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) Crew Certificate
Course Description
Candidates will learn the roles and responsibilities of an IRB Crew member. They will be trained in preparing the boat for operation, safely and effectively launching and landing the boat, learn to identify hazards, demonstrate safe crewing positions and retrieve patients from the water, (conscious and unconscious), perform pre- and post-operational checks of the IRB and complete the necessary paperwork. Work effectively with the IRB Driver.
Course Requirements
- Bronze Medallion
Course Structure
The IRB Crew Certificate is usually run over a period of 4 training sessions lasting 3-4 hours each. They may be done over 4 weeks (Sunday mornings) or sometimes over 2 weeks (Sunday and Sunday mornings).
North Cronulla SLSC usually runs a course soon after the finish of a Bronze Medallion course.

IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) Driver Certificate
Course Description
Candidates will learn the roles and responsibilities of an IRB Driver. This role carries some of the highest responsibilities of any Patrolling member. They will be trained in preparing the boat for operation, with specific attention to the running and operation of the motor. Safely and effectively launch, land and negotiate the surf using the correct techniques. Learn to identify hazards and deal with incidents; reporting to the Patrol Captain. Conduct rescues, both conscious and unconscious. Supervise and the Crew and deal with the general public. Carry out emergency procedures if required, in the surf.
Course Requirements
- Bronze Medallion
- Candidates must hold the IRB Crew Certificate and be at least 17 years of age at the time of assessment.
Course Structure
The IRB Driver’s award is usually run over a period of two to three months. Drivers are required to complete at least 20 hours of training and then must be deemed by the Trainer to be ready for assessment.
North Cronulla SLSC usually runs one or two courses a season. Training may continue in the off-season, (May onwards).

Silver Medallion Beach Management
Course Description
This award is necessary to become a Patrol Captain. Emphasis is placed on identifying hazards and mitigating risk on the beach, while managing the Patrol and all of its members in a team environment. Communicating with the Patrol, the Public and Officers above in the chain of command is vital to being an effective Patrol Captain. Through surveillance and preventative actions, you will keep the public safe at the beach, and sometimes beyond.
Course Requirements
- Candidates must be at least 17 years of age at the time of assessment
- Bronze medallion.
Course Structure
The Silver Medallion Beach Management award is usually run over three or four evening sessions of approximately three hours each, over a two-week period. Some travel may be required as courses are run at different locations within Sydney Branch.
Sydney Branch runs a number of courses after the season has started but places must be booked in advance.
