Women's 7's Gala Day Match Report

31 May 2018

Match Report:

Well history was made again on the weekend my friends, our first surfclub girl’s rugby side made an appearance.

Fresh from the ideal preparation of 1 training session, the girls graced the field of Foreshaw Rugby Park – Southern Districts for some 7-a-side action.

The historic squad consisting of:- Brook Dent, Bronte Howell, Jess Woolbank, Trish Cowan, Nikki Glasson, Abbey Bofinger, Maggie Mahoney, Layne Holloway, Lara Hughes, Sarah Bell, Jess Mullaly and Charlotte MacNamara donned the mighty blue and gold colours of our club under the Sea-Lice Banner. After a lot of nerves and some trepidation the girls ran on to face another newcomer, to girl’s 7s, Briars. After the coin toss went to our Captain, Brook, Briars kicked off to Jess W. who immediately pinned her ears back racing down the sideline for the first try. Probably the best start seen since ‘Hondo Gratin’ the Sea-Lice were immediately on the board and was duly converted by Brook. The Sea-Lice girls, aptly (or incorrectly) named the ‘Sea-Splice’ by Debbie Holloway, then gave their adoring fans a taste of ‘anything the boy’s can do we can do better’. With Sarah, Jess and Charlotte doing the ‘cutting and dicing’ out wide and Bronte, Maggie, Brook + Abs doing the mincing in the middle, the ‘Splice’ were never headed scoring a litany of meat pies. Some these scores included length of the field stuff all converted by Brook ‘twinkle toes’ Dent. Final score 35-0.

The next fixture we were matched with Shute Shield club, Eastern Suburbs, whose ladies had been a regular in the current Ladies 7’s Tournaments. The game was an arm-wrestle – after an initial score by our girls Easts hit back with 2 tries before the girls put on some moves to level the tries scored. My highlight in this game, and to be honest the whole day, was the resolve the girls showed in defence – particularly when our line was tested in the second half. Brook, Maggie, Bronte and Charlotte were all solid denying the East girls time and time again. There were also a number of great covering tackles again denying the opposition. Girls also that had never tackled anyone in their lives showed what they could do if they had a go – big shout out to Jess M and Lara. The final score was 12-10, the difference being Brook’s conversion. Although I feel that defence kept us in this game – great stuff!

The girls certainly turned a few heads, with a number of coaches since offering them games – all over Sydney. It was great to see them all having a crack and coming off with smiles on their faces. A big shout out to all our Surf-club friends and family who turned up to cheer them on – we certainly had the biggest and loudest fan-club on the day. Also would like to acknowledge the girls new sponsors of Linda Hawkins from ‘Save-Your-Money’, Justine Lea from ‘Back-to-Balance’ and Monika Pawlowski from ‘Bayside Dental’ (all club members).
